I love romances and I love writing them (mostly because I am so picky over what works for me!)
Loves:
I adore First Love romances. Mostly because they are so intense. You can of course fall in love later in life and whatnot but it's never going to have that intensity and spark of the first time. Age and experience bring a little more cynicism and a more guarded heart to the table, I've found. Which is fine, you can have a spectacular romance with older people but I remember fondly my young loves and I love re-living that phase vicariously through fiction.
I enjoy Pride and Prejudice clones immensely---when done right. The couple that at first antagonize each other but later grow feelings is super tasty! However, I feel like few authors truly get what that story was about and think that sticking a rich asshole (tm) with a sassy girl (tm) is what it was. Which is why we get awful abominations like Fifty Shits of Grey. Frankly, it is disturbing how often abusive, stalkerish romance is presented to be this wonderful thing.
Not Love:
May-December romances. Absolutely hate them. Especially when one partner is super young, the pedo implications and uneven power dynamics make my skin crawl. Basically I want both partners to be as much as possible equals in the relationship.
