Boy, I've got inspiration from all over the place.
As far as tone and meaningfulness, I've taken a lot from the lyrics of Dave Matthews. Dark, but sweet. He's an odd lyricist. I've also taken a lot from shows like Ren and Stimpy, The Simpsons (seasons 1-8), Cowboy Bebop, Steven Universe, Chowder, Freakazoid, Tiny Toons, Ergo Proxy, Animaniacs, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, and Looney Tunes.
A few illustrators that have had a hand in my style are John Kricfalusi, Anthony Holden, Jhonen Vasquez, Raul Trevino, Lizzy Marlin, Sarah Anderson, Min, Chuck Jones, Don Hertzfeldt, Al Hirschfeld, Arlene Klasky, and Gabor Csupo.
Films have a lot of impact on how I write, so more on tone and composition. Some of these are Paprika, Adaptation, A Scanner Darkly, Vanilla Sky, The Waking Life, The Shining, Better Off Dead, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Caddyshack, The Grand Budapest Hotel, I Huckabees, Brick, Collateral, and many, many others. Mostly dry, absurd, or dark comedies and psychological thrillers.
