Taste is a funny thing. I thought I'd give a real life example of this. Hopefully this will be useful to people.
Here is a letter I got from somebody from a couple of months ago after a convention:
Hey Nico,
I really enjoyed your book. The art is great and the story was funny and easy to follow.
Great work.
I got you added to the Comic Book DB - Check it out:
The Donut King TP - http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=328553
Nico Harriman - http://comicbookdb.com/creator.php?ID=46875
PS - I hope you come out with those donut pillows some day
Nick
Now here is a rejection letter I got recently when I wanted to get my comic reviewed by this guy on tumblr:
Hi Nico,
I'm going to be honest, your comic was terribly boring. I'm not going to post a review on my blog for it either, I'm sorry.
My advice if you're going to do auto-bio stuff, is lighten it up from time to time. This drudgery of depression was a complete chore to read about. Maybe if your art was better, it might be a bit better of a read, but as it is, this was dreadful stuff, man.
Sorry that sounds so harsh, but you got to get better. End of story. Try telling fiction for a bit until you find your way. I can see that your art has some potential, but you need a lot of work. Especially on the storytelling end.
Take this as you will, I know it's harsh, but it's the truth.
I guess all I can say is just keep making work. I don't make art or comics for anybody other than myself. I'd prefer people to like my stuff but if they don't that's fine.
