Well, there's a lot more backstory to be revealed, but I will say he wasn't always a friar/follower of peace, but used to be part of a different clan/order/cult within the Pecking Order. Something happened to him in the past that made him decide to pursue a life of poverty/sanctity, and that's all I'll hint at.
Inspiration is actually a really funny story. My uncle keeps chickens, and I grew up in the suburbs most of my life and never saw a chicken in real life. Got a chance to see one back in 2020. While I was there, I overheard my uncle and mother talking about "fryer" chickens. My silly childish brain saw a "Friar" chicken with a bald head. I sat down and drew up a few panels, originally wanting to make a funnies comic, but I gradually added some more dramatic/serious type events and decided to build up an overall story.
Did a lot of research, and learned about chicken behaviors, terminology, facts. how to raise chickens, how to, uh, dispatch them, processing plants, etc and I created plot points that revolved around all this research and fashioned an overall story with a beginning, middle and end. Also had a fascination with myth/religions, so I implied some things there (Fours Orders, friar's beliefs, Halaka) but you'll see more on that later. A lot more.
I won't dump too much more info on the makings of, but I will say many of the names I picked for characters also were derived from puns/breeds/classifications of chickens. Friar = fryer, Bucky = Buckeye, Gallus = gallus domesticus, Schmultz = schmaltz, a Jewish chicken broth used in cooking. Usually, the names will inspire the characters, and vice versa.
I guess, bottom line, I was inspired by my research and growing fascination, and wanted to tell a story to show all there is to know about chickens, while also conveying it in a fun, dark, and entertaining way.
