You've got a cool world and setting, which is always a plus in my book! (I'm kind of a sucker for creative and unique worlds).
The introduction to the various inhabitants of the world gives us an understanding of what kind of people live in this world, yet without rambling or going off on unnecessary detail. It's brief and to the point.
This first episode does a very good job of laying a foundation for the rest of the story.
The second episode starts off pretty well, too: We get an introduction to the main protagonist and his goal. The set up seems well executed, and it gets my attention.
(Side note: pirates are bad. It seems like the world (that we live in) has forgotten that outlaws that murder and pillage without remorse are bad. Sure, that Jack Sparrow seemed like an okay guy, but there's so much "pirates are good, law is bad" in entertainment media right now that it's a big relief to see things put where they're supposed to be for once.)
After the captain's introduction, however, that's when some problems start coming up. Mainly, the characters, and how many there are. After Alex is given a proper (and well-handled) introduction, nine more characters show up. NINE. Most of them pop up very briefly and are forgotten. Most of them aren't even given names-- which is actually a good thing, since there's no way I'd remember all nine character's names if they had. So actually, considering how many new characters there are here, it's actually handled fairly well. In a way. But still, that's a lot of characters to have thrown at a reader all at once. It's not even the number that's the problem, so much as it feels like the story itself forgets them. If we could see the other characters in the background in panels after they appear, it'd feel more coherent. As it is, it all feels kind of disconnected, like a bunch of different stories trying to interrupt each other and fighting over the spot light. It's not a bad scene, but just feels disjointed.
Anyways, sorry for all that. I'm not trying to pick on you, or say that your story is bad, it's mostly just a few (but prominent) problems with that one page. It really is an interesting story and setting, and I look forward to seeing where it goes. In fact, if I didn't like it, I wouldn't bother saying all that I did.
And I don't mean to say it from the perspective of being better some how. I'm not. My own comic has it's share of flaws, too.
Sorry. That went on a little longer than I had wanted it to.
In short: The world is cool, the story is good, the main character seems alright so far, but that last scene was kind of a jumbled and disconnected mess, though I think it was kind of a one-time problem.
I have high hopes for Skyward, and I look forward to future installments.
Good luck!
