Art goals! Those lovely lovely things that will never run out. We all have those big grand "I want to be able to draw as well as [insert person]" kinda dreams but right now I'd love to hear about smaller steps on the way to mastery that people have reached / are working towards.
So, what is the latest goal you've reached? Do you even set concrete goals for yourself or just wing it? Why/why not?
Personally, I find it really useful to have something concrete to strive for. Having a huge formless cloud of "SO MANY things that need improvement" can get pretty overwhelming so I find it easier to chip things down in smaller pieces. Often I do it intentionally right from the start. But sometimes, although rather rarely, there's so much I don't know that I don't even know enough to start pinpointing what is wrong. That's what happened when I started digital coloring for the first time. xD But after a while I knew enough of the medium to start separating it into problem areas. Heh, digital definitely didn't come to me easy as breathing. More like a fish flopping on dry land slowly inching towards the water.
But the most recent thing is inking from less detailed sketches.
For a long, long time, I wasn't able to ink without really detailed sketches underneath. Like, basically the exact same picture but rougher. I think part of the problem was that I didn't trust that I could actually ink without doing that. Overthinking, you lovely enemy of mine. And I figured that if the inking doesn't go right, I can use that as a sketch and try again. It's not traditional after all. xD (which I do love but maaaaan, am I glad for switching to digital)
But I'm super happy that I can pretty reliably ink from pretty simple sketches because it cuts so much time from the production time. And I do want to make pages faster than I currently can. Besides, drawing the same thing over and over again gets boring after a while.
