My comic is set in a real historical setting, so I understand what you mean by doing more research than actual writing lol. I really can't write or draw anything without a lot of research! And I'm a history major, as well, so I'm a huge stickler for historical accuracy. I'll often have a crisis if I realize that I've slipped up somewhere, or used fashion references even a couple years newer than the date of the scene... for example, recently I was working on my script for chapter 2 and a new important character appears on the scene. I realized I hadn't even thought about how she gets there. So I had to look up the average speed a stagecoach travels, various roads at the time leading from where she lives to Wyoming, factor in weather and environment, given that it's winter, rest stops, etc. and there was no way she'd have gotten there in under a month. And I needed her there within a few days of Dallas's arrival in the first chapter. Cue freak-out lol.
It's also surprisingly difficult to find precise information on fashion, technology, everyday life, and routines of the mid-19th century. I've gotten good at it because it's my absolute favorite handful of decades, but if you look up "Victorian fashion" or "19th century fashion" you know what you get? Bustles! Bustles everywhere! As if Victoria only reigned from 1880 to 1900! Victoria's reign stretched from 1837 to 1901! Give hoopskirts some love!
